[Data] Processing Damage by Mechanical Grinding Method

If you have any dissatisfaction or questions regarding the finish of the grinding, please consult Aitesu!

This document introduces the processing damage associated with mechanical polishing methods. Mechanical polishing is a long-established technique for preparing cross-sections, capable of producing cross-sections over a wide range, from a few centimeters to about 10 centimeters. However, issues such as altered layers, steps, elongation (stretching), and embedding can occur during processing, leading to problems where "what should be present is absent" and "what should be absent is present." At Aites, we conduct highly reliable cross-section preparation based on the technology and experience we have cultivated over many years. [Contents] ■ Main processing damages in mechanical polishing methods ■ Importance of polishing finishes tailored to material characteristics ■ Case studies with solder (BGA) *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Introduction to Cross-Section Processing and Observation Methods

Mechanical grinding allows for a wide range of processing and observation! We will propose appropriate processing and observation methods or combinations.

We will introduce sample processing using mechanical polishing and mechanical polishing combined with ion milling treatment. Mechanical polishing is a well-established and historically long-standing method for producing cross-sections, allowing for a wide range of cross-sectional fabrication. Additionally, by combining it with ion milling treatment, it is possible to create observation surfaces comparable to those produced by CP processing. At Aites, we propose appropriate processing and observation methods or combinations based on our accumulated know-how. Please feel free to contact us for consultations or inquiries. 【Features】 ■ Mechanical polishing allows for extensive processing and observation. ■ By repeating mechanical polishing and imaging, three-dimensional observation is possible. ■ Observation at any desired location can be performed based on the constructed 3D image. ■ After mechanical polishing, depending on the sample, observation comparable to that of CP processed samples may be possible. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

[Column] Various Polishing Methods: "Chemical Mechanical Polishing Method"

Polish the chemically changed surface intermittently with materials such as paper, grinding stones, or buffs!

The chemical mechanical polishing method is, literally, a way to polish stainless steel using "the power of chemistry + the power of machinery (physics)." The power of chemistry refers to the process of immersing or applying special chemicals or polishing liquids to stainless steel, which brings about chemical changes on the surface. The power of machinery involves intermittently polishing the chemically altered surface with polishing materials such as paper, grinding stones, or buffs. By combining these two forces, a high-efficiency (the advantages of chemical polishing) and high-resolution (the advantages of mechanical polishing) stainless steel mirror finish can be achieved. *For more detailed information, please refer to the related links.
